THE SHORT VERSION

Check the product and route together; not every service has the same fare rules.

Start with the journeys you repeat

Before deciding whether you need a car, identify the journeys you will make most often. Test a work or study commute, a shopping trip and a late return. Include the walk to the stop and a realistic waiting margin, not only time on the vehicle.

Malta Public Transport publishes current fares and travel-card options. Compare the relevant product against the services you plan to use. Do not assume that a visitor pass and a personalised card work in the same way.

Treat ferries as specific services

Ferry routes can be useful parts of a plan, but check the operator, departure point and timetable. Gozo Channel publishes its own schedule; a different operator can have different terminals and arrangements. Save the current information rather than relying on a screenshot from an old post.

Have an alternative for a delayed or cancelled service. If you need step-free boarding or particular assistance, confirm it with the operator before relying on that route.

Compare the total effort

A slightly longer walk with fewer changes might be preferable to a route that looks faster on paper. Build your choice around your own mobility, hours and tolerance for transfers.

  • Check current routes and product exclusions.
  • Try your commute before committing to a home.
  • Budget for occasional alternative transport.
  • Recheck ferry operation when conditions change.
