Use current quotes for your circumstances; keep assumptions clearly labelled.
Separate your monthly costs
Begin with housing, household bills, groceries, transport, communications, healthcare or insurance where applicable, and personal spending. Put each category on a separate line. The NSO Household Budget Survey describes how household spending is studied, but a household survey is not a quote for a new arrival.
For rent, collect current examples that match your intended area, property and household size. For transport and utilities, use current providers’ information. Record the date, what is included and whether a figure is an actual quote or your own allowance.
Build a second sheet for arrival
Deposits, temporary accommodation, travel, document costs and basic household purchases can make the first month different from a normal one. Do not hide these inside an optimistic monthly average. Add a reserve for things that take longer or cost more than expected.
As a purely illustrative calculation, assumed monthly costs of €1,000 housing, €200 bills, €300 groceries, €100 transport and €200 other spending add up to €1,800. These numbers are invented inputs to demonstrate the method, not verified Malta market prices or a recommended budget.
Test a less comfortable month
Increase your largest uncertain cost and check whether the budget still works. If it does not, change the plan before making commitments. Review your estimates once you have real bills.
- Label each figure: quote, bill or estimate.
- Include one-off arrival costs separately.
- Compare after-tax income with complete costs.
- Keep an accessible contingency reserve.
